Do Vitamin Supplements Improve Oral Health

Posted on: March 16, 2018

When it comes to oral health, most people think about brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist and avoiding sugary foods. Nowadays, it seems like every doctor is suggesting the use of vitamins for nutritional balance and optimal health. There is little doubt vitamin supplements can improve biological health.  There is a question as to whether these supplements improve oral health.

Here is a look why vitamins are so important for oral health.

Vitamin C’s Impact on Oral Health

Nutritionists and doctors alike are typically quick to tout the merits of vitamin C.  This vitamin does everything from protecting against heart disease and scurvy to combating cancer and sudden infant death syndrome.  Take vitamin C in the proper manner and it will bolster the strength of your teeth and assist your body in all sorts of other ways.

Vitamin C is especially important to bolster the strength of the gums and other soft tissue within the mouth.  Vitamin C supplementation will protect against the early stages of gum disease and even prevent tooth loosening.  However, vitamin C is a threat to tooth enamel with improper consumption. It is possible for chewable vitamin C pills to contribute to the formation of one or several cavities.

Potassium

Potassium enhances bone mineral density.  It functions in tandem with magnesium to stop the blood from becoming overly acidic.  If the blood becomes too acidic, it can pull calcium right out of your teeth and bones.  You can obtain potassium through bananas, tomatoes, lima beans, sweet potatoes, prunes and potatoes. Swiss chard, prunes and avocados.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for the body’s absorption of calcium.  It enhances bone mineral density to boot. Vitamin D can be obtained through exposure to sunlight.  This vitamin is also in canned tuna, fatty fish, mushrooms, milk, orange juice and fortified cereals.

Phosphorus Plays a Part in Dental Health

Phosphorous supports calcium in the bolstering of strong teeth and bones.  Phosphorous is available through supplements and foods like salmon, tuna, shrimp, sardines, scallops and cod.  Even some plant-based foods like lentils, soybeans and pumpkin seeds have phosphorus.

Vitamin A’s Role in Oral Health

The mouth requires vitamin A as it prevents the onset of dry mouth.  Furthermore, vitamin A facilitates rapid mouth healing. Load up on vitamin A with supplements or foods like eggs, fish, liver and leafy greens.  Orange-colored foods like pumpkin, sweet potatoes and apricots are jam-packed with beta-carotene that the body transforms into vitamin A.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K serves as a shield of sorts.  It helps stop substances that break bone apart.  Vitamin K also assists in the body’s creation of osteocalcin that supports tooth and bone strength

What About Those Fizzy Vitamin Drink Supplements?

Though it is tempting to supplement with those tasty vitamin drinks, these treats tend to be loaded with sugar.  Some such vitamin drinks might have health benefits yet their sugar will eat away at your tooth enamel. When in doubt, choose the pill form or consume your vitamins through food rather than beverages.
