Mouth Guards

What are Mouth Guards?

A mouth guard is an oral appliance that is worn to protect your teeth. Most often, mouth guards can and should be worn when playing close contact sports. They are helpful in that they protect the teeth from damage and excessive wear in the event of facial injury. Mouth guards can be worn at nighttime to prevent the effects of bruxism (tooth grinding). These guards are often referred to as night guards, but they look and act similarly to a sports mouth guard.

Why Are Mouth Guards Needed

Why are Mouth Guards needed?

The primary function of a mouth guard is to keep the teeth protected. During close contact sports, you or a child may experience facial injury that can cause teeth to break, crack or become dislodged. Rather than deal with an emergency appointment and lifetime damage to their permanent teeth, a mouth guard can keep them protected. These mouth guards are specifically made for the patient so that they fit comfortably within the mouth.

Who is a candidate for Mouth Guards?

Mouth guards are ideal for patients who play close contact sports. If you suffer from bruxism and find that you grind your teeth a lot at night, a night guard can be made and fitted specifically to your teeth. We can perform an exam to determine if you would benefit from having a mouth guard made. Regardless of age, a mouth guard is essential in preserving your smile.

What happens during the Mouth Guard creation process?

In order to make a mouth guard, we will take impressions. These molds are then used to craft a new mouth guard using soft and pliable materials. You will come back into the office to be fitted with the mouth guard. We can make adjustments to the guard as needed so that it’s as comfortable as possible. It is recommended that you wear this mouth guard whenever it is needed and to replace it when it shows signs of wear.

If you think you might benefit from a mouth guard or need to have one made for your child, call us today and we can get you into our office for an appointment right away.
